What are spices and aromatic herbs?
A spice is a plant substance or part like a
seed (ex cumin), fruit (ex nutmeg), root (ex ginger), bark (ex cinnamon), or any
other part. They are used for flavouring, colouring or preserving food
throughout the history. Spices are not considered herbs and vice versa. Herbs
are the leaves, flowers or stems of plants used for flavouring or as a garnish.
Many spices have antimicrobial properties and this the reason they are used to
protect the population in their nutrition in particular on the consumption of
meat and fish in hot climates. Spices are also used in medicine, religious rituals,
cosmetics or perfume production.
